Discovering Links for Metadata Enrichment on Computer Science Papers

At the very beginning of compiling a bibliography, usually only basic information, such as title, authors and publication date of an item are known. In order to gather additional information about a specific item, one typically has to search the library catalog or use a web search engine. This look-up procedure implies a manual effort for every single item of a bibliography. In this technical report we present a proof of concept which utilizes Linked Data technology for the simple enrichment of sparse metadata sets. This is done by discovering owl:sameAs links be- tween an initial set of computer science papers and resources from external data sources like DBLP, ACM and the Semantic Web Conference Corpus. In this report, we demonstrate how the link discovery tool Silk is used to detect additional information and to enrich an initial set of records in the computer science domain. Resource Sharing in Academic Libraries: A Tool for Collaboration

Resource sharing is an important and widely well-known concept in the field of library science. The concept is recognized by the term library networking which deals with the interconnection of libraries so that the participating libraries can share information and resources effectively. It aids to overcome the limitations like enormous cost of purchase, bibliography handling, storage of material etc. as a result of the exponential growth in the information produced. Resource sharing is a solution to optimize library resources. Thus, resource sharing in libraries has become essential in current scenario, and it commands world-wide acceptance. Based on the literature review it can be said that academic libraries, especially in developing countries should continue subscribing to information resources through the Consortium Building (CB) and explore their usage by ensuring total addressing of patrons information needs. Also government should earmark appropriate funds for the purchase of information technologies facilities needed by academic libraries for resource sharing. The paper recommended that the least forms of resources sharing like Inter library loan should be given priority especially for rare information resources that have high demand but their supply is low and exist in print format to start with. The work further recommends that academic libraries should formulate effective policies that will ensure library resource information sharing is properly conducted in academic libraries

Teaching Climate Change Concepts and the Nature of Science: A Library Activity to Identify Sources of Climate Change Misconceptions

A library activity was developed in which students found information about climate science misconceptions from popular and scientific literatures. As part of the activity, students developed a rubric to evaluate the credibility and type of literature sources they found. The activity prepared students to produce an annotated bibliography of articles, which they then used to create a training document about a climate science misconception for staff at a local science center. Evaluation of annotated bibliographies showed that students were able to distinguish between popular and scholarly literature but struggled to identify primary and secondary sources within the scholarly literature. In the training documents produced four weeks later, students retained information literacy skills and demonstrated aspects of scientific literacy, using language that addressed common barriers to scientific literacy such as the idea of scientific consensus. In self-assessments, students felt that they could identify and evaluate information resources related to climate science

У статті методом історико-наукового аналізу висвітлено найважливіші краєзнавчі студії в діяльності ННСГБ НААН та її Інституту історії аграрної науки, освіти та техніки.В статье методом историко-научного анализа отражены важнейшие краеведческие студии в деятельности ННСГБ НААН и ее Институту истории аграрной науки, образования и техники.The most important local history studies in the National Scientific Agricultural Library of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine and its Institute of History of Agricultural Science, Education and Technology is observed by historical and scientific analysis in the article. The historical explorations concerning the formation, development and functioning of the main national library from agriculture and forestry, branch leading depositary, complex scientific, library and bibliographic center of network of agricultural libraries in Ukraine have shown that its history is closely connected with changes in the state policy on the functioning of agricultural science, education, engineering, agriculture, and library science. However, the main focus of the library was and remains library and bibliographic information service of scientific research institutions, scientists and specialists of agriculture and related sciences to it at different times of its life. It was found that the institution was evolving complex way in the development and activity. The main directions of operation are recognized the basic functions, objectives, global trends and directed to the accumulation, preservation of library collections, inheritance of the past, the scientific information and documentary support of agricultural science and production. In the establishment from 2001 postgraduate studies, doctoral on the specialty the history of science and technology are opened, refresher courses of librarians from scientific agricultural library and scientific conferences of young scientists and specialists are annually held, the Institute of History of Agricultural Science, Education and techniques is operates, the forerunner of which was from 2001 the Center of History of Agricultural Sciences.
